Though Thomas Jefferson, one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence and the American Constitution asserted that each individual should have the unalienable right to 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,' the creation of the American Constitution, based on the Federalist Papers and extending from the First and Second Constitutional Congresses, supported the continuation of caste divisions in the United States.
