Labor Strikes' Effectiveness
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper discussing the damage that labor strikes can do to the object of the strike. There have been other famous strikes, most as evenly divided in results as these two century-apart strikes discussed here (UPS and Carnegie Steel). Minneapolis' Bloody Friday on July 20, 1934 resulted in a better Teamster contract at company expense, but also resulted in the death of two strikers. The rail strike in Buffalo in 1877 also was violent, but had the distinction of having the support of the middle class. It can be argued that conditions a century ago necessitated drastic measures. Those strikes of today in venues such as UPS and airline companies reflect more greed than anything else, hurting the company and ultimately diminishing the gains by workers that otherwise would be possible. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Labor Unions In America
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. The reason why labor unions failed to greatly improve the lives and working conditions of American workers between 1860 and 1930 can be traced back to the Noble Knights of Labor who, while espousing the overwhelming need for worker representation, failed to maintain a dignified and antiviolent approach to fair labor. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Labor Unions in the 90's
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page research paper looking at some of the changes in and political activities of the labor movement. Included is the AFL-CIO's aggressive recruiting of new members, downsizing in their own management ranks and a move to an informality of organization historically unknown in labor unions. Unions are experiencing election victories of more than 70% when paid organizers are not used, compared to a win rate of less than 30% when they are. Another boost to the unions is the increasing numbers of members from white-collar professions.

Los Angeles Metro Transit Authority Strike: Negotiations
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. A stalemate concerning scheduling, overtime, health benefits, reducing workers' compensation losses and other subjects prompted a system-wide strike of the Los Angeles Metro Transit Authority this past summer. Leaving nearly four hundred fifty-five thousand computers stranded – primarily students, seniors and the poor – the MTA strike went into effect because representatives on both sides could not come to acceptable negotiations. James A. Williams, general chairman of the United Transportation Union acknowledged that such significant strikes typically occur when neither side can come to agreement.
